There’s a new scam targeting Memphis families—and it’s hitting people when they’re already under emotional stress. Scammers are posing as bail bond agents, calling family members of recently arrested individuals and demanding money to “get them out.”
The problem? These callers don’t actually work for a bail bond company—they’re criminals trying to steal your money.
How the Scam Works
-
Scammers call families pretending to be with a legitimate bail bond agency.
-
They often sound convincing and might know your loved one’s name, arrest date, or charges.
-
They demand immediate payment—often via unusual methods like Bitcoin ATMs, prepaid cards, or cash apps.
-
If you send money, it’s gone—and your loved one is still in jail.
Don’t Be a Victim — Take These Steps:
1. Google the Bail Bond Company
Before doing anything, search the name of the company they claim to be from. Don’t trust the number they give you—look it up yourself online and go to the company’s official website.
2. Call the Company Directly
Use the verified number from their website. Ask:
-
Is this person an employee or agent of yours?
-
Do you have someone in custody under my loved one’s name?
-
What are the payment options?
If the person who called you doesn’t work there, it’s a scam.
3. Only Pay Using Methods Listed on the Official Website
A legitimate bail bond company will have clear, secure payment options listed on their site—typically credit/debit, in-person payments, or online payment portals.
If someone is asking you to:
-
Pay using a Bitcoin ATM at a gas station
-
Buy prepaid cards
-
Send money through apps with no receipt
That’s not a bondsman—it’s a scammer.
Warning Signs of a Bail Bond Scam
-
High-pressure tactics or threats
-
Urgency and secrecy (“Don’t tell anyone else”)
-
Payment through strange methods
-
No official contract or paperwork
-
Caller ID that looks real (spoofed jail or business numbers)
What To Do If You Get a Suspicious Call
-
Hang up immediately
-
Call the jail or a known, licensed bail bond company to verify
-
Report the call to the Memphis Police Department
-
Warn others in your family or church/community groups
