Basic Requirements
To be a bail bondsman in Tennessee, you must be 18 or older, have a high school diploma or GED, submit to a background check, and be free of prior felony convictions.
Lawyers, law enforcement officers, jailers, judges, court clerks, and anyone in charge of prisoners are prohibited from getting a bail license.
Note: If you plan on establishing your own bail bond company in the future, you must have a minimum of two years of experience as a bail bond agent.
Apply For A License
To apply for a bail bond license in Tennessee, you must submit an application to the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance.
Go to NIPR.com (National Insurance Producer Registry) and fill out the appropriate Uniform Application.
You will need to pay a $50 state application.
If you apply for a license as a limited insurance producer (which you should), you will not have to sit for an examination.
Criminal History
Along with your application, you must also submit an affidavit detailing your criminal history. Please ensure that the information provided is accurate, or you will be disqualified.
Education
The required training from the Tennessee Association of Professional Bail Agents (TAPBA) costs around $240. After your training is complete, you will be issued a certificate of compliance, but you will still need to take continuing education courses yearly from the same association.
You are not required to have an Associate or Bachelor’s degree, although having a degree in criminal justice or other related fields will certainly help your career.
Filing Your Tennessee Certificate
Submit your signed certificate of compliance to the court clerks in the areas you plan to work in.
Semi-annual Financial Reports
The TS code 40-11-303 requires bail bond agents to file their financial reports to the county clerk twice a year—every January 15th and July 15th.
